Around 50 automobiles have been marked with what seems to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Cars, walls and mailboxes were defaced, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they announced in a release.
Law enforcement state they were alerted during the night on Wednesday, when a resident observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued substance.
The fluid had been drawn in the pattern of a swastika, they stated.
Police then located multiple other marked cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation banning the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police report initial examinations indicate the substance was likely human blood.
"At present there remains no clue as to where it came from; authorities are not yet cognizant of any physical harm in association with the occurrence," they stated.
Local authorities announced they were attempting "to solve the case" and have requested to the residents for information.
A high-ranking official said the incident rendered him without words and needed to be resolved quickly.
"This event hits the core of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack five years ago," he posted on online, referring to the murder of nine victims by a assailant focusing on people of immigrant origin in February 2020.
